Questions & Answers

What documentation do overseas visitors wishing to marry require?
Persons born outside Australia are required to produce an original birth certificate or certified copy of it, or their current passport.

Do you need to be an Australian Citizen to marry in Australia?
Anyone can marry in Australia regardless of nationality, but the Marriage may need to take place in the presence of a diplomatic or consular officer of a proclaimed country recognized by Australia.

How long do we need to be in Australia  before we can marry?

You can marry the day that you arrive if you wish. There are no time constraints providing adequate notice has been given. Note that you cannot marry until you have each signed the Declarations Form 14. I would require that this be done between 3 and 7 days prior to the actual marriage ceremony.

How much 'Notice' must be given to be married in Australia?
At least one month or more but not more than 18 months before the intended marriage. In exceptional circumstances the Registrar may approve a lesser period.

Will the marriage be recognised in my own country?
Yes, you should confirm this within your own country or with a diplomatic or consular officer from your own country.
